Pet Vaccinations: Because You Love Them

When you have your pet vaccinated, you are protecting them from dangerous and highly contagious animal diseases. Pet vaccinations are especially important for puppies and kittens. When they are weaned from their mother’s milk, they no longer receive essential antibodies. Vaccines stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies with the help of antigens, giving your pet vital protection.

Safety and quality for the pets of Greenwood are our top priorities at Vista Hills Animal Hospital.

Pet Wellness and Vaccinations

Depending on your pet’s needs, we recommend either annual or biannual wellness exams. Vaccines are generally provided during these exams to boost your pet's immune system and keep them protected from disease. The wellness exam is the perfect time to discuss which vaccines are best suited for your pet’s lifestyle. We recommend core vaccines for virtually every pet, and may suggest certain non-core vaccines depending on exposure risks.

Our core and lifestyle vaccines for dogs include:

  • Rabies (Core/1 and 3 year)
  • DAPP or DHPP (Core/1 and 3 year)
  • Leptospirosis
  • Bordetella/Parainfluenza (kennel cough)
  • Lyme
  • Flu (when there is an outbreak)

Core and lifestyle vaccines for cats include:

  • Rabies (Core/1 year)
  • FVRCP (Core/1 and 3 year)
  • Leukemia

When You Should Have Your Pet Vaccinated

Since puppies and kittens are more susceptible to illness, they should receive their initial round of vaccine boosters between six and eight weeks old. When you bring a new pet into your home, please make a wellness appointment so we can discuss a vaccination schedule.

Furthermore, they should receive their boosters every three to four weeks to further strengthen their immune system. They will receive their last round of boosters at approximately 15 weeks old. Adult pets will receive maintenance vaccinations either every year or every three years, depending on their lifestyle.
